Designing an effective business web site takes several things into consideration. You need to ask yourself several questions. Who is your audience? What kind of graphic design do I want to use? Should I use a shopping cart or sign-up form for my product or service? How will I promote the site? These are just some of many questions you should be asking.

Who is my audience?

If your web site is designed for a business your audience will obviously be your customers. You will need to think of the experience level your customer will have using a computer. Not all of your customers will have the same level of experience using a computer (Particularly the internet). Ensure that your site navigation is easy to use. Most people will want to find what their looking for on your web site in three clicks or less. Consider using large fonts on your web pages for the vision impaired. Your pages should be easy to read, uncluttered and take advantage of simple to use 3 step sign-up conventions for ordering your product or service.  Does your audience consist of people in your local area, national or world wide? Is my content age appropriate? The point here is know your audience and make your site easy to use.

What kind of graphic design do I want to use?

Your graphic design is what creates the first impression to the visitor of your site. Having a poor or inappropriate graphic design usually creates an impression of low quality and can reflect badly on your ability to present your content effectively. You need to have a balance between design elements like color, font types, layout, animated banners and advertisements, page backgrounds and the ability to show your content in a clear effective manner. Usually less is more.

Content is king. Your graphic design should not take your eye away  from the content. You might think a photography web site would use fancy art work to show off the photographers artistic design sense. However the opposite us usually true. What the photographer wants to show off is the photos. Using fancy graphics and animation on the side bars will detract the eye from seeing the images that are usually centered on the page. Again balance is key,

Should I use a shopping cart or sign-up form for my product or service?

Typically the type of products and services and the number of products will determine the type of e commerce solution you will need. If you provide a service and need to collect information from your customer than a sign-up form will work. If you have multiple products or services (A shoe store for example) then a shopping cart will fit your needs better.

How will promote the site?

Again, know your audience. If your product or service is focused on computer or internet users you will want to advertise on the internet. Most people will not be looking in the local news paper for a computer program. If you are a contractor or builder than the news paper is a good place to start. Social media like Facebook, My Space and Twitter are good places to promote your products and services to your network of friends and business acquaintances. The point here is that your should place your advertising in a place where your prospects are likely to be looking.
